Microsoft distinguishes between ‘Windows Update’ and ‘Microsoft Update.’ When ‘Windows Update’ is enabled/configured, the target computer will download/install only operating system updates. When ‘Microsoft Update’ is enabled/configured, the target computer will download/install updates for the operating system as well as updates for other Microsoft applications.

In BatchPatch you can enable ‘Microsoft Update’ on a target computer by using ‘Actions > Windows Updates > Opt-in to Microsoft Update (enable updates for other MS products).’ This is equivalent to going to the target machine directly and launching the Windows Update GUI and choosing the option to ‘Get updates for other Microsoft products.’

Once enabled, you then need to configure your search settings. Under ‘Tools > Settings > Windows Update’ there is a ‘Server Selection’ option. If this option is set to ‘Microsoft Update’ then the target machine will search directly on Microsoft’s public update server for OS updates PLUS Microsoft application updates. Also, if the ‘Server Selection’ is set to ‘Default / Managed’ and the target machine’s configuration is already set to search Microsoft’s public server, then that too will include OS updates plus Microsoft application updates. However, if the target machine is configured to use a WSUS server and BatchPatch is set to ‘Default / Managed’ then the target machine will only be able to download/install updates that are offered by the WSUS server, which may or may not include Office products, depending on how that WSUS server is configured.
