    Hi Doug

maybe a strange request / enhancement to BatchPatch, but here we go!

We discovered a problem / misconfiguration with our DNS this morning, so a lot of servers (they use DHCP) lost their records after scavenging taking place in our DNS.Hosts were refused to update their records by DNS for some reason. Since I add my hosts by name into BP, I could not run “ipconfig / registerdns” since BP could not ping them by name….

The “Ping Reply”column is also turned to “unable to find host” or similar so I cannot track the IP´s to the hosts that have missing dns-records.

Should it possible to have a column like “last known IP”?, so when the hosts stops responding to their names, I can easily find the IP´s of the hosts!

It will also be good to have, to check if someone / something change the IP of a server.

    regards

    Mats

Thanks for the suggestion, Mats. We will consider this for a future build. Do you happen to have a saved .bps file from a previous run from last month? That file would likely contain the IPs, right?

    Hi Doug

Yes, saved .bps file contains IPs – so that´s a way around, IF servers have been pinged in BP!

On the other hand, I cannot use it right away cause I want to know which hosts that responds to names and those who don´t, the IPs are replaced with “Ping failed – Could not find host” when sending commands, but it´s a first step to get hold of IPs and hostnames.

The final solution would be an opportunity in BP to toggle between IPs and hostnames, so If I have registered hosts by name, I should be able to switch to IPs instead, and get an answer back that some hosts are not resolvable by name anymore and then -> ipconfig /registerdns

Sorry for using BP to solve network issues, but BP saves my day almost every day! 🙂

Thanks, Mats. We’ll consider how to incorporate this in a future version.

I should also point out that you can put a range of IP addresses into BatchPatch instead of host names, and then you can use ‘Actions > Get info > Get host name’ to to essentially a reverse lookup. You’ll end up connecting by IP to the target computer, and then the target computer itself (rather than DNS) will tell you what its host name is. This should help, I think.
